Ofcom: Internet security must be highlighted as necessary

18th November 2009

A recent report by Ofcom has thrown up an interesting trend which needs to be addressed if the UK is to get the most out of the service, it has been said.

Robin Blake, the head of media literacy at Ofcom, responded to the fact that in last month's report from the organisation, 56 per cent of adults showed concerns about what is on the internet, while the Get Safe Online Report outlined the need for improved internet security.

He explained that Ofcom recognises the need for there to be concerted efforts that can make people change their general behaviour to get more relaxed and comfortable when using the internet, including those with small businesses in IT.

Mr Blake continued: "Skills and confidence [are] vitally important on the internet because as you develop skills and confidence, you understand the clues that you will get from the websites that will give you confidence that you can for example transact in a safe and secure way."

He added that Ofcom is partnering with a whole range of organisations to raise this necessary awareness and supporting people in their digital journeys as they start using the web.

A recent Connect survey found that the two major concerns about outsourcing services like IT support were 'loss of control' (56 per cent) and 'budget over-runs' (43 per cent).ADNFCR-1071-ID-19466706-ADNFCR
