Intel dominates market share of processor market

16th September 2009

Intel, the leading provider of processors to the PC and laptop market in the world, has increased its market share to the highest level since 2005, according to recent statistics.

Research from iSuppli found that Intel now commands 80 per cent of the market, clearly pushing AMD to the fringe again.

The last time the organisation peaked above the 80 per cent marker was four years ago when its total share was 82.4 per cent; the figure today stands at 80.6 per cent.

Matthew Wilkins, iSuppli principal analyst for compute platforms research, said of the trend: "Intel benefited as the global PC market took a first small step towards recovery in the second quarter, with global shipments rising by one per cent from the first quarter."

Despite this, he emphasised that with PC shipments still falling compared to a year earlier, Intel still suffered a decline in microprocessor revenue, though rival AMD had a similar fate.

AMD was created in 1969 and is the third-largest supplier of graphics cards to the market after Intel and Nvidia.

According to a recent survey by Connect, the two biggest IT headaches for businesses were 'everyday hassles with IT' (37 per cent) and 'security concerns' (32 per cent).ADNFCR-1071-ID-19364588-ADNFCR
