Swine flu 'may push VLEs in schools'

14th September 2009

The predicted spike in swine flu this winter could push forward the popularity of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in school, highlighting the benefits of such technology, according to a new report.

CRN revealed the views of Alcatel-Lucent, which is partnering with organisations such as Freedom Communications, NextiraOne and Switch Communications to target opportunities which the situation could provide.

Natalie Stallwood, the business development manager for Alcatel-Lucent's UK& Ireland enterprise activities, explained that in the event of a total closure of schools due to an outbreak of the condition, many schools will not be prepared to fulfil their duty to teach through other means.

She explained: "Becta has been pushing the message of extended learning for educational benefit but sometimes it needs a catalyst to force behavioural change."

It could also signal similar moves among small businesses in IT which lack similar services.

Becta used to stand for the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency, and promotes the embrace between schools and computing.

A recent Connect survey found that the two major concerns about outsourcing services like IT support were 'loss of control' (56 per cent) and 'budget over-runs' (43 per cent).ADNFCR-1071-ID-19360192-ADNFCR
