Netbooks and mobiles 'blurring lines of internet access'

25th August 2009

The difference between netbooks and mobile phones with internet access is getting smaller by the day, according to a major voice in the computing industry.

Paul Allen, the editor of Computer Active, explained that Nokia's recent entry into the market through the Booklet 3G is not surprising and could potentially shake up the industry.

He explained: "The divergence between mobile devices is closing now, we have the iPhone now that is a practically a laptop with a phone built into it so the idea that a phone manufacturer should start moving into the computing arena is fairly logical from my point of view."

After all, both types of device are used for similar functions by their owners, Mr Allen continued, noting that web surfing will always be popular on any format that can support it, though their specific functions will also mean they will never be seen as the same product.

Computer Active continues to be the UK's best-selling computer magazine.

In a recent survey of SMEs for Connect, the two most important benefits of outsourcing were guaranteed response times and allowing in-house IT staff to concentrate on more strategic issues.
