UK hacker faces extradition to US

31st July 2009

Prolific hacker Gary McKinnon has lost his latest bid to be tried for his crimes in the UK, meaning that he will likely be extradited to US to face a judge and jury.

The man is to be brought in front of a court for his part in hacking into systems belonging to the Pentagon and Nasa, with the online expert claiming that he wanted to find out whether or not there was any documentation relating to extraterrestrial life.

Mr McKinnon committed his crimes in 2001 and 2002, with the 43-year-old lined up to face a possible 60-year jail term, particularly if American authorities decide to make an example of the high-profile case.

Since his trials in the UK began, Mr McKinnon has received the backing of a number of major players in UK politics, including Mayor of London Boris Johnson, to have his hearing in the UK.

The situation may make things much worse for Mr McKinnon - who already has Asperger's syndrome - as many fear for his personal health as he may become suicidal.
