BT internet move is 'great sign'
BT is to roll out fibre-optic broadband in the coming months - something which could really help small businesses in IT across the UK, one commentator has stated.
Product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk Michael Phillips said: "We welcome the announcement from BT although the proof of the pudding will be in the speeds this is able to deliver. Big ticket speed promises via new broadband technologies have disappointed in the past."
He explained that with the UK being a service economy, it stands to reason that this investment by companies is made as the country at large needs to be able to move and respond quickly - and quicker than other international rivals.
Mr Phillips added that it was "vital" for all other internet service providers to follow BT's lead and work towards delivering 100Mbps broadband speeds by 2012.
BT stated that its move is the first part in its longer-term programme to make super-fast fibre broadband available to 40 per cent of the UK - or ten million homes - by 2012.
A recent survey for Connect found that one in ten companies has lost important data as a result of a backup failure. The company has now developed a unique online backup service for SMEs to ensure they can survive any disaster.
