SSD move signals future for Samsung?

29th June 2009

Rumours have hit the internet concerning the future of Samsung in regards to its production of 1.8-inch drives, with the traditional offering possible being replaced with solid state drives (SSDs).

It was reported in the last day by Digitimes that the creation of regular hard drives has been halted by the organisation, which is looking into going into the more high-tech market for SSDs which are known to have no moving parts, in turn possibly making them more reliable and energy-efficient.

Only another company - Toshiba - still produces 1.8-inch HDDs, with the new move perhaps leaving their rivals with another piece of technology solely manufactured by the organisation, alongside the HD DVD player.

The demand for 1.8-inch HDDs has been on thin ice for a number of months, though the desire to manufacture smaller units of computing such as the notebook and netbook has allowed for continued production.

Samsung has just premiered its newest laptop, the R620, which delivers full HD widescreen capabilities, an AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics chip and 4GB of DDR 2 memory.
