IT groups learn from hacker

19th March 2009

Some of the world's most experienced IT security system breaching experts have met this week.

Hackers attended the Pwn2Own contest yesterday (March 18th), with one managing to cause problems in seconds.

Charlie Miller, a principal security analyst, discovered a hole in the Safari browser after just ten seconds, after last year hacking a MacBook in under two minutes.

However, rather than being infuriated at this IT security breach, Mr Miller claims that companies are pleased with his work as it allows them to improve their systems.

Mr Miller told CNET News that he had informed Apple workers of his plans earlier in the event.

He added: "They're happy because they get free research and get a bug fixed."

Earlier this week, it was claimed that the BBC may have broken the law during a documentary on IT security.

The NNC Click programme showed a presenter purchasing a botnet, which was later used to send spam.

New research from Connect found that, on average, it takes businesses that use backup tapes take 11.6 hours to retrieve and restore files. Connect is now recommending that SMEs switch to online backup.
