Mobile internet 'great success' in the UK

3rd February 2009

The increased proliferation of internet access through mobile methods has been extremely successful in the UK, according to a sector specialist.

Regulatory director at Hutchison 3G Tim Lord made his comments to the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar: Digital Britain as part of the conference predicting the future of consumer communications.

He continued: "Mobile broadband has been an enormous success in the UK and about 15 per cent of customers are actually thinking about giving up their fixed-line and moving to a mobile service."

Mr Lord added that this could stand to increase although it is entirely dependent on how convergent services on the internet become.

The action plan formulated through the Digital Britain seminar was published at the end of last month and details 22 recommendations as to the future of the UK's telecommunications industry.

It highlighted the need to expand the mobile internet industry through a dynamic investment climate for digital content and services and the modernisation of wired, wireless and broadcast infrastructures.

According to a recent survey by Connect, the two biggest IT headaches for businesses were 'everyday hassles with IT' (37 per cent) and 'security concerns' (32 per cent).
