The web search option on BBC Online is being scrapped after it was deemed that it was not significantly different in quality from Google or MSN search engines to carry on funding it, according to the BBC's online controller.
Seetha Kumar revealed the decision in a blog post and said that usage is not at a high level, with users being able to access to similar services easily.
Ms Kumar commented that it would be better to focus on improving the own BBC website search by enhancing the way in which users are directed to related content.
"To be honest, there is a lot we can do to provide users with a range of editorially selected links to other high quality sites in the UK and elsewhere," she wrote.
In related news, Google has recently launched Picasa for Mac, which helps users organise their photos with greater ease and aids them in sharing them over the internet as well.
More than half of small businesses (53 per cent) believe that the most important benefit of outsourcing is guaranteed response times for IT support. London-based Connect conducted the research in 2007.
