Technology is often taken as the panacea for security problems and businesses should implement a clear policy that spells out what practices are acceptable, it is claimed.
Writing for www.publicservice.co.uk, Raj Samani, from the Information Systems Security Association's UK Chapter, believes that companies should have a disciplinary procedure in place to deal with those who do not comply with the policy.
Once the risks to a company have been found, then technology can be implemented to protect against data loss.
Mr Samani states: "One of the critical factors for making any organisation secure is its ability to define its concerns before committing budgets to technology."
He admits that technology "can ... mitigate the risk of data going missing" in a number of cases.
Robert Winter, chief engineer of data recovery at Kroll Ontrack UK, claimed earlier this month that storing information in cloud servers is a more secure way of keeping data.
