IBM harnesses USBs to fight fraud

30th October 2008

Online banking fraud is to be targeted by the latest release from IBM - the Zone Trusted Information Channel (ZTIC) USB stick.

The computing giant said that the ZTIC is able to detect critical transaction information between itself and the browser, catching any problems and displaying them on the device and requiring "explicit user confirmation" before money can continue transferring through the full TLS/SSL protocol.

IBM said: "If any malware on the PC has inserted incorrect transaction data into the browser, it can be easily detected by the user at this moment."

The technology firm added that its new product, which installs onto a computer like a USB flash memory device, can harness proxy configurations to safely access and process pre-set banking websites effectively without prior need for user intervention.

In 1924, the company was set up under the name International Business Machines, originally incorporated under the name of Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company in 1911.

In a recent survey of SMEs for Connect, the two most important benefits of outsourcing were guaranteed response times and allowing in-house IT staff to concentrate on more strategic issues.
