IDC: HPCs still in great demand

11th September 2008

The market continues to grow for High Performance Computing (HPC), it has been said.

International data analysts IDC released its Worldwide High-Performance Technical Server Qview, which found that the HPC market for technical servers showed ten per cent growth in the second quarter of 2008.

On top of this, revenues grew four per cent compared to the same period the previous year to reach $2.5 billion (£1.4 billion), defying current economic difficulties in other industries.

IDC added that it predicted the market for HPC to grow to reach $15.6 billion in 2012 after a consistent compounded annual rate of 9.2 per cent.

"The continued strong growth of the HPC market is being driven primarily by clusters and newer processor technologies," said Earl Joseph, IDC program vice-president for HPC.

Mr Joseph focuses his consulting efforts on the US, Europe and Asian-Pacific markets in the fields of supercomputers and technical servers.

More than half of small businesses (53%) believe that the most important benefit of outsourcing is guaranteed response times for IT support, London based Connect conducted the research in 2007.
