A report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) has identified that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across the world are more concerned about the economy than with innovative technology.

The IDC focused on the importance of economic growth and business conditions, green technology, software services, virtualisation and the internet as a resource in their research.

SMBs noted the necessity of the internet and highlighted its potential for their futures, largely disregarding green technology and virtualisation except in long-term projects.

Research manager for global SMB research at IDC, John Roberts, said: "Despite the global slowdown, SMBs across all regions need to look ahead to when the global economy rebounds.

"Most still have a near term focus, with only modest interest in technology areas that have been getting a lot of attention elsewhere."

Earlier this month, however, Access Markets International noted the climbing trend in SMB proliferation of "green IT", adding that many were embracing it to save money on rising energy bills.

A recent Connect survey found that the two major concerns about outsourcing services like IT support were 'loss of control' (56 per cent) and 'budget over-runs' (43 per cent)
