Westminster council 'to be IT infrastructure-free'

21st July 2008

Westminster council has said it will have completed the outsourcing of all of its IT services by 2015, it is reported.

The council's IT department will take on a stronger project management role, as suppliers will be responsible for day-to-day IT services, according to ComputerWeekly.com.

It says the main aims of the move are to transfer risk while improving service and efficiency levels.

Chief information officer David Wilde commented that the IT department in the council will need to acquire a "broader" skill-set, while retaining their technical knowledge.

According to the website, he said major legislative changes have had a great impact on the technology used by his organisation in delivering its services, adding: "Moving to an infrastructure-free environment should mean the supply side should be much more agile and can deal with these changes more quickly."

Meanwhile, Kent County Council has signed an outsourcing contract with Unisys, under which the technology firm will create and manage a public information network and security service for the council until 2012.
