Digital spectrum to be auctioned off by Ofcom
Ofcom is to auction the digital dividend spectrum in summer 2009, aimed at delivering innovative services to the UK consumers.
The spectrum is believed to be able to offer ultra-fast mobile broadband, mobile television and digital services in standard and high-definition.
It is currently used for delivering analogue television channels and will be freed up in phases when the digital switchover happens between now and 2012.
Ofcom plans on making 128MHz of cleared spectrum available across the UK after an auction in August 2009.
This market-led approach was set out in December 2007 when Ofcom published it general statement on the digital dividend detailing how the spectrum should be released.
According to the recently published Deloitte Digital Index, online consumption of TV is growing strongly in the UK, however mobile television has a "miniscule demand" with less than one per cent of the population consuming media through it.
