Honda implements new data storage software

4th June 2008

Formula One team Honda has implemented new data storage and back-up capabilities to try and increase data protection reliability and cost effectiveness.

It currently holds around 100 terabytes of information on a virtualised storage area network (SAN), supplying information to about 80 file servers and 700 clients.

The multi-platform nature of this system previously restricted the number of possible back up solutions, prompting the racing team to move to BakBone Software's heterogeneous integrated data protection solution.

Speaking about the new system, Matt Harris, technical infrastructure manager at the Honda Racing F1 Team, commented: "The combination of affordable pricing with strong features such as serverless backup, SmartClients and staged disk backup really impressed us."

Other features of the software include direct back ups across the SAN and the option to use either the virtual or server client back up.

It was reported in Computing magazine earlier in the year that Leeds NHS trust was to switch its disaster recovery plan to a virtualised system.

A recent Connect survey found that the two major concerns about outsourcing services like IT support were 'loss of control' (56 per cent) and 'budget over-runs' (43 per cent)
