'Green' PC released by Dell

3rd June 2008

Computing hardware giant Dell has launched a new "green" PC aimed at helping businesses save on energy costs.

The Vostro 410 desktop PC is estimated to be capable of saving up to 47 per cent in energy expenses and the manufacturer asserts that it offers a combination of performance and expandability.

Frank Muehleman, vice-president and general manager of Dells' small and medium business small arm?, said: "With the Energy Smart Vostro desktop, we’re able to save our customers money and collectively cut down on CO2 emissions."

It is stated that more than 25 per cent of the plastics used to build the PC come from recycled materials.

Furthermore, the flat panel monitors can save 28 per cent in energy costs in comparison to CRT monitors.

Despite Dell's attempts to produce a greener type of PC, the Guardian recently reported that thousands of unwanted computers from Europe and the US are ending up dumped in west Africa which is causing harm to the local environment as lead, mercury and other dangerous chemicals can be released from the discarded machines.
