IT urged to go green

19th March 2008

IT can help make the world a greener place, it has been claimed.

The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) believes that a change in attitudes can help in the battle against climate change, ITPro reports.

Speaking to a technology event in Barcelona, Dennis Pamlin, WWF global policy advisor, said: "The IT industry needs to shift its focus. It is already waking up to the fact it needs to develop more environmentally sustainable technologies to tackle the two per cent contribution it makes to global emissions."

Mr Pamlin added that IT outsourcing, home working and the facilitation of greener buildings are all things that technology could help deliver and that these would all have a positive impact on the environment.

Earlier this month, research by Forrester found that European IT departments are keen to embrace greener IT products.

According to the firm, the market for green IT consulting services will be worth GBP 2.4 billion by 2013.

According to a recent survey by Connect, the two biggest IT headaches for businesses were 'everyday hassles with IT' (37 per cent) and 'security concerns' (32 per cent) In a recent survey of SMEs for Connect, the two most important benefits of outsourcing were 'guaranteed response times' and 'allowing in-house IT staff to concentrate on more strategic issues'.
