BlackBerry 'hit by poor disaster recovery plan'

14th February 2008

Inadequate disaster recovery measures could have led to the second lengthy BlackBerry outage in less than 12 months, one expert believes.

Computerworlduk.com reports comments from analyst Ken Dulaney, who said that while the cause of the failure could have been entirely unexpected Research In Motion (RIM) - which runs the BlackBerry network - "obviously didn't do as deep a dive as they needed to on disaster recovery issues".

RIM said the latest outage was caused by issues with an internal data routing system which had recently been upgraded.

The firm recently issued a statement which said: "RIM has made significant investments to improve its system recovery infrastructure and processes over the last year, which enabled level to return to normal quickly.

RIM was founded in 1984 and has its headquarters in Ontario, Canada. It is listed on both the Nasdaq stock market and the Toronto stock exchange.
