Carlsberg praises benefits of data recovery systems

17th January 2008

Lager manufacturer Carlsberg has installed a new data recovery system designed to ensure that production at its Leeds brewery will not be halted in the event of an IT failure.

The facility produces a total of three million hectolitres of lager every year and it is imperative that the IT systems which monitor the process run efficiently without interruption.

In order to ensure that this happens, the firm has installed a new system which copies relevant data from the production server to a separate server, which allows the brewery to use this dataset if anything goes wrong.

Graeme Walker, senior systems engineer at Carlsberg UK, said: ["A] benefit of having two identical datasets is that we are able run our tape backup from the target servers.

"This means that the back-up process doesn't interfere with production performance and we are able to run the back-ups during standard working hours."

Mr Walker also said the new system makes it possible for the IT support team to upgrade both the servers and software or carry out checks on the production server easily by using the target server to run the brewery.

Research for Connect in 2007 found that 88 per cent of UK businesses were interested in Disaster Recovery systems primarily to protect their critical applications and data.
