BT aims to create largest broadband community

8th October 2007

Telecommunications firm BT has said that it will help to develop the largest wireless broadband community in the world in a new tie-up with FON.

The scheme will see customers sharing broadband capacity and getting free access to FON's Wi-Fi hotspots in countries such as the US, Japan, Spain and France when within the range of other BT FON users.

This will allow them access to almost 200,000 wireless hotspots around the world, and will be particularly welcomed by business that are moving towards remote working. Firms need to ensure they have adequate IT support in place, of course.

The founder and chief executive of FON, Martin Varsavsky, said that the global network of Wi-Fi was important.

Speaking to the Independent he said: "This is the push that Wi-Fi needs to make it ubiquitous."

A recent survey by the Information Technology Innovation Foundation found that the UK lags countries such as Hungary and Slovakia in terms of broadband speeds.

According to recent survey by Connect, the two biggest IT headaches for businesses were 'everyday hassles with IT' (37 per cent) and 'security concerns' (32 per cent)
