Study highlights need for IT support
A new study shows a lack of concern about security issues among users of mobile IT devices, underlining the need for SME IT services.
The survey, commissioned by Cisco and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and carried out by InsightExpress, found that three-quarters of mobile users were not always mindful of potential security problems.
More than a quarter (28 per cent) said they hardly ever considered such risks, and some admitted that they never did, even saying they didn't know they needed to be aware of them.
Almost half (44 per cent) said they had opened messages or attachments from unknown sources, with a contributory factor being the difficulty in distinguishing legitimate emails. Also, the smaller screen size of mobile devices was a factor.
"While this study shows mobility provides businesses with new risks, so do other internet services and new technologies," said NCSA's executive director, Ron Teixeira.
"Mobility and the internet can be used securely and safely if businesses institute a culture of security within their workforce by providing their employees with continuous cyber security awareness and education programs."
Jeff Platon of Cisco added that technology, education and communication were all important steps that could be taken to address IT corporate security.
According to recent survey by Connect, the two biggest IT headaches for businesses were 'everyday hassles with IT' (37 per cent) and 'security concerns' (32 per cent)
